Wanted – your old drugs

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), joined by ONDCP and government, community, public health and law enforcement groups will hold a nationwide prescription drug “Take-Back” day on Saturday, September 25th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time. DEA and local partners will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction at collection sites around the country. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

A very helpful reader sent a reminder about the local collection of old drugs. This is the announcement she sent:

In Laredo – the Laredo PD is partnering with the local DEA (my addition: and ONDCP and government, community, public health and law enforcement groups) to take back unwanted/unused or expired prescription drugs on September 25th from 10am to 2pm at the Central Fire Station (#1 Guadalupe St). No questions asked. Take some time and clean out your medicine cabinets and safely rid of unwanted medications! (emphasis mine)

The DEA website has the full press release reminding you why it is important to have a collection as opposed to disposing in other ways:

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards.
