Cuentos y Leyendas entre Vecinos

Las vecinas (the neighbors), Mrs. Ramos & Mrs. DeLaGarza, compare plant cuttings

Those crazy neighbors over in St. Peter’s Historic hood are busy bees. Last month they had the “Garden Share” event which turned out to be standing room only. It was moved indoors due to weather but people still came out to talk all things green and swap plant cuttings. The idea came from one of the neighbors who was wanting do a plant exchange like her parents used to; and, with the help of Keep Laredo Beautiful, it turned out to be a great event.

This month, they are planning for some storytelling fun and shared food. They’ve had other potlucks amongst the neighbors, but this time… the broader term of vecino is being used. Self-published author, Cesar Salazar, will join the potluck to share stories from his book, Cuentos y Leyendas en la Villa de San Agustin de Laredo.

Bring your favorite appetizer, entree, dessert or beverage to share at the recently renovated Totem, LLC offices, the former Texas Rural Legal Aid building, where the ghosts only come out when you’re working alone late at night. Just kidding :P.

Be on the lookout for future events from this group of neighbors aiming to make their historic barrio a great place to visit. They meet the 2nd Saturday of every month for business & planning so if you are a resident (work, rent or own) of its 36 blocks, stop on by or shoot them an email at

  7. Do you know where I can find a copy of Cesar Salazar’s book?

It’s self-published so it’s on Amazon. FYI – it is in Spanish. He says he has had some not-so-pleasant experiences with Amazon &, ideally, buying directly from him would be best but I’m sure distance is an issue.
