The recent discussions and the blog reactions to the suggestion of prayer in public meetings leads me to a really cool announcement from Laredo Community College. The information to be shared in their new speaker series sounds promising!
They have planned some very well known, very well respected speakers for the Fall. Check this out, on October 5, 2011, Laredo will be visited by Dr. Jack Levin, a foremost expert on serial killers. From his website:
Over the past 25 years, I have specialized in the study of murder, especially of the most irrational and despicable sorts. My interview with the Hillside Strangler took place early in my career as a criminologist, but I have had many more opportunities since then to examine the methods and mentality of brutal killers and other violent criminals. Thus, I have conducted face-to-face interviews and corresponded by mail and phone with killers, their family members, their lovers, and their neighbors. I have also testified in criminal and civil court cases, consulted with prosecution and defense attorneys, and assisted the police in apprehending violent predators. Finally, I have often been asked to comment on newsworthy incidents of homicide for all major network news programs including NBC Nightly News, ABC World News Tonight, CBS Evening News, 20/20, 48 Hours, and Dateline NBC and most national talk shows including Today, Good Morning America, Oprah, Larry King Live, and The O Reilly Factor. Even in the “green room,” I have had lengthy discussions with killers, victims, killer groupies, as well as the family and friends of both killers and victims.
The flyers with the formal announcements are not out yet but because this promises to be a fascinating event, I am hoping you are marking your calendars for this date (time and place to be announced) and also November 8, 2011.
This is one man I have wanted to hear speak for some time. Dr. Michael Shermer is the founding publisher of Skeptic Magazine and author of The Believing Brain. This book was recently recommended to me by a good friend – thanks Vish – and is sitting in my reader waiting to be read in its entirety. By coincidence, in that same week, I am told that Dr. Shermer is coming!!! And he is coming a few days after the UFO conference. No worries, I don’t think he is coming to debunk any UFO evidence – but to explain why our human brains have the need to believe in things that do not logically make sense.
Dr. Shermer has quite a few YouTube videos of his presentations – challenging the average person to consider who and what they believe and why. Fascinating stuff. I hope local readers take the time to check out both speakers – it doesn’t hurt to learn various perspectives and respectful discussion. Yes, that includes Laredo’s city council and mayor.
