Dependence Day in Laredo

Love the name of Margo Porra's blog!!

Fellow Latina blogger This is Nachos Mama’s Blog had a really cool idea – Dependence Day, celebrated on the 3rd of July when the US was still dependent on Britain! If we celebrate Washington’s birthday, why not the British too?

Apparently, the Zetas want us to be a little skerred and word on the street (and on CNN and the Texas Department of Public Safety) are reminding us that this weekend is not the weekend to go explore Nuevo Laredo. That’s why I am going to Zapata instead to watch grown men wrestle :P. Check out the TX DPS warning:

Avoid travel to Nuevo Laredo this July Fourth weekend

The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Webb County Sheriff’s Office recommend against traveling to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, during this Fourth of July holiday. Both agencies have received credible intelligence from multiple sources that indicates the Zetas Cartel is planning to target U.S. citizens who travel to Nuevo Laredo this weekend.

“According to the information we have received, the Zetas are planning a possible surge in criminal activity, such as robberies, extortions, car-jackings and vehicle theft, specifically against U.S. citizens,” said DPS Director Steven C. McCraw. “We urge U.S. citizens to avoid travel to Nuevo Laredo this weekend if it can be avoided.”

There is no indication that these cartel-related criminal activities will occur in Texas, but the DPS and Webb County Sheriff’s Office cannot discount the information received that supports possible crimes against U.S. citizens in Nuevo Laredo and perhaps the surrounding Mexican suburbs.

The DPS and local authorities are fully prepared to respond to any criminal activity that occurs within Texas.

Dang it! There go the plans for visiting Nuevo Laredo… kidding, kidding. I will be celebrating the 4th of July in Zapata seeing that the festivities already started in Laredo. If you didn’t get to see it, the 4th of July parade was this morning in Laredo. I missed it but the parade goers left me a little reminder to mark that they were in my hood, specifically, on my driveway – grrrr…:

if Mexico doesn’t want U.S. tourist dollars so be it. they have proven to be their own worst enemy and have for the last 6 years been alienating themselves from the rest of continent with the inability of their govt. to control crime. their loss, i miss going to the mercado. :/
