Ponga la basura en su lugar

How many remember that Spanish-language PSA campaign from the 70’s?? “Ponga la basura en su lugar” means put trash in its place – but in a very memorable sing-song tune (I looked for it online but couldn’t find it in video or sound clip). I was a little girl but it has stayed with me all these years.

Apparently, it hasn’t stayed with some folks in Laredo:

Outside of the downtown HEB. Wonder why they don't have it in Spanish?? Not that it would help much 😦

A downtown bote - apparently the table top shape of the can is perfect for placing garbage on top and not inside.

That last one got me thinking about a new PSA slogan:

For a win, throw it in,
it’s just a few inches, no sean pinches

Ok, ok, so the English doesn’t quite rhyme with the Spanish – I’ll just have say the last part to the cochinos out there who litter.

Nambre nah. It takes too much work to throw a cup in a trashcan . . .

In defense of germaphobes everywhere, I HATE those trashcans. I refuse to touch them. Why can’t they have open air ones for us to toss our trash in? Those stupid little bins make you TOUCH them. Granted, I won’t leave my trash ON them or on the floor, but I also won’t use those trashcans. They’re nasty and unsanitary.

The open air trashcans were replaced in DT because they were attracting Bees that were stinging pedestrians and infiltrating stores. The bee problem has subsided but now the new receptacle pull doors get stuck when people overfill them and is one of the reasons people leave trash on top or alongside the receptacle. There is also supposed to be a Solid Waste crew stationed DT in charge of continuously picking up trash and litter and making sure the trashcans are not stuck, but they are rarely seen. KLB has placed signs all over DT asking for folks to “place trash where it belongs”, but people think they are referring to our City Council.
