I hope you are all getting ready for the Anti-Bullying/Suicide Awareness Rally at 6pm at the Laredo Public Library’s Multi-purpose room on June 1, 2011. It is part of the series for “Thirteen Reasons Why.”
Thirteen Reasons Why, the book, is about suicide and geared towards teenagers. Of course, suicide impacts many of our lives since we have known of those who have been bullied to near that point or have known someone who has thought about suicide. I could tell you dark stories but I won’t. I will only encourage you to attend today and definitely attend the author’s visit to Laredo on Thursday, June 9, 2011. Check out the flyer for more information.
Lastly, I HUGE applause for the Teen Advisory Board who is planning events based on topics that truly affect this community. As many know, even this past weekend we heard of the suicide of another teenager. The statistics also indicate that the rate of Latinas (link to NE story of Latina suicides) (that is almost 1/2 of Laredo even if you don’t ID yourself as such) committing suicide is the highest of all the groups.
EVERYBODY SHOULD REMEMBER THAT SUICIDE IS A PERMANENT SOLUTION TO A TEMPORARY PROBLEM….SUICIDE IS NOT THE SOLUTION,,,SEEK HELP PLEASE…..TODAY MY SISTER WOULD HAVE TURNED 43,BUT SUICIDE CLAIMED HER,SHE WAS ONLY TWENTY WHEN SHE COMPLETED SUICIDE,,,OUR LIVES WILL NEVER BE THE SAME WITHOUT HER….HER NAME WAS OLGA,,OGIE,,,MARTINEZ…….AND WE MISS HER ,AND ALWAYS WILL…..SINCERELY MARY
I am so sorry for your loss, Mary – even though it was 20+ years ago, I am sure the hurt and questions are still there.
