Laredoans will remember reporter Mileka Lincoln on local Pro8News some time back. I guess she is using her former contacts for a story on los dos Laredos. Let me say it again, LOS DOS LAREDOS.
The above link is to a video out of San Antonio describing the proximity of the two cities yet being in two different countries and having two different problems. News reports like this, despite being short, at least let people know the crime issues and how different they are between the sister cities. I repeat how I feel safe in Laredo but that does not change the fact that I do hear the gunfire on some nights on the other side of the river. It is a sad fact that I hope will change soon… unless the world really ends on May 21st, 2011…
I understand that local leaders (ie. Miguel Conchas of CofC, etc.) want to draw that line but… after the stupidity of blocking out Nuevo Laredo on road signs by TxDot, hijo’esu… me dan vergüenza.
To have the Nuevo Laredo Presidente Municipal, Benjamín Galván Gómez, also calling meetings to talk about this insult tells you the impact it had. His reaction is quoted in Pro8News:
“I think it’s an injustice to Nuevo Laredo.”
“They’re two cities in one. Nuevo Laredo is in Mexico and Laredo is in the United States, there are some people who don’t know the difference but a majority do.”
The mayor of Nuevo Laredo was concerned enough to hold a meeting with officials from Laredo earlier this afternoon. His sentiment is the same as many of the people we talked to.
“We are a big family, we are the same. We cannot think about Laredo without thinking about Nuevo Laredo or vice versa.”
“Their roots are there, our roots are here, yea there may be violence there, people know that, but I don’t think there’s any reason for removing Nuevo Laredo from the signs.”
The blogosphere (well, those who blog locally and those who choose to comment) took issue over this idiotic and costly move. See blogs and mainstream media LaSanbe, Laredotejas, Wake Up Laredo, El Mañana, the Texas Observer, En Línea Directa.info, Metro Noticias, Pro8News who reported on the reaction, Laredo Morning Times who gave us this gem of a document:
I say we pick a day for a flash mob along I-35 with our signs letting people know Nuevo Laredo is up ahead :P.
