From Senator Judith Zaffirini’s Facebook post:
JUST HEARD THAT THE PROPOSED REDISTRICTING MAP STRETCHES OUR LAREDO SENATE DISTRICT TO SOUTHEAST TRAVIS COUNTY; adds Guadalupe and Caldwell counties; and eliminates Bexar, Dimmit, and Zavala counties. Travis County would have four senators, while Bexar (where my northern district office is) would be reduced to three. This certainly violates the “communities of interest” principle.
More information: 31 percent of Hays County also is added. Atascosa County is reduced to 2 percent.
Public hearing on Thursday, May 12, around 1:30pm. A more objective explanation of the concern for Democrats comes from NBC News’ First Read.
Senator Zaffirini: FINALLY SAW THE REDISTRICTING PLAN FOR OUR DISTRICT. It eliminates 98 percent of Atascosa and all of Bexar, Dimmit, Frio, and Zavala. (Awful!) It adds 38,066 persons in Caldwell, 49,858 in Guadalupe, 48,090 in Hays, and 163,264 in southeast Travis County. We keep Bee, Duval, Jim Hogg, Karnes, La Salle, Live Oak, McMullen, San Patricio, Starr, Webb, and Wilson counties. Population: 816,169. Unbelievable!
