Those who love Mexican-style Lucha Libre and American-style Wrestling (not of the Olympic competition kind) know the differences between the two. But this fregada thinks it all looks the same. El Partner frustratingly tells me that Mexican-style is more acrobatic and relies heavily on costume. He tells me that American-style is more about strength and is really showy. If he says so…
So tonight, there is a Lucha Libre planned by Estrella Promotions for the Laredo Civic Center at 7pm. On April 30th, the Laredo Wrestling Alliance (LWA) will have a different kind of performance planned.
El Partner has been helping the LWA – except… he tore his abdominal muscles getting out of a kayak the other day – he said it is PROOF that he actually does have abs 😛 pobrecito. So he is healing and won’t be taking part in the April 30th Nixon High School Class of 2001 Reunion fundraiser.
Every wrestling match they have had thus far has been free to the public. The audiences have been packed to the max at the Texas Armory and all expenses have been donated by the volunteers who want to see the LWA grow. This will be their first venture into ticket sales – available for $7 a ticket and taking place at Alexander Crossing. They tell me they have just been asked to wrestle in Zapata where the audience will be much larger.
The dedication of the wrestlers, both male and female, is obvious. They work with a trainer and have fun while learning about safety. Whether you prefer “high brow” or “low brow” – consider that they are primarily a “service brow” wrestling team.
Good luck, Ace and Madness and the gang. Finally, I learned their wrestling names!!
