Friends and I went to the Gasland presentation today and understand that RGISC (Rio Grande International Study Center) will be hosting other showings in the near future. Obviously from the KGNS newsclip above, the NBC-Affiliate also took notice for their “top story” of the night.

I do hope additional folks go to see the documentary when it is set for viewing again. As you know, our area is preparing for an even higher increase in hydraulic fracturing, aka FRACKING, because of the exploration at the Eagle Ford Shale Play near the Cotulla area. RGISC prepared a very well done powerpoint – the following are some of the highlights of information that might be of interest to us:
By coincidence (or maybe because of the tremendous interest – even the San Antonio Express had an article about what is going on locally), The Huffington Post article ‘Fracking’ Report: Carcinogens Injected Into Wells, House Democrats Saymirrors the concerns of what will be happening in our surrounding area.
WASHINGTON — Millions of gallons of potentially hazardous chemicals and known carcinogens were injected into wells by leading oil and gas service companies from 2005-2009, a report by three House Democrats said Saturday.
The report said 29 of the chemicals injected were known-or-suspected human carcinogens. They either were regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act as risks to human health or listed as hazardous air pollutants under the Clean Air Act.
So what can you do about it? Well RGISC had a petition you could sign asking for DISCLOSURE of what chemicals are used but also had in their last slide, more information:

A question for everybody who is opposed to fracking: What steps have you taken to conserve energy/fuel? I ask because the ‘low-hanging fruit’ from our energy reserves has been picked or is being exhausted. In order to keep the economy going — and people warm in winter and cool in summer — we need to dig deeper, dig differently, dig farther out from shore, and this brings up a whole new kind of environmental and health risks. Rather than just saying no, are you doing more than paying lip service to finding alternatives?

Just wanted to let you know it isn’t that people are opposed to fracking, it is the desire for a full disclosure of chemicals and processes used. The holes are already dug but before there is more impact, the RGISC folks want the “Halliburton loophole” in the Clean Water Act closed.
id rather be hot in summer than be able to set fire to my drinking water.

Also, while we must be vigilant about conservation as well, I think Poncho1950 misses the point of this post and of the film. New energy + poisoned water reserves = bad news for everyone. If it is a choice between having an economic boost or not poisoning our water reserves, I choose not poisoning our water.
You know Henry Ford initially made his first vehicles to use dual fuel , gasoline or grain alcohol . He had the vision that most farmers did not have access to the petro kind and they could make they own fuel from the grains grown in their farms. The latter is more environmentally sound and much safer to produce. Rockefeller, the oil giant at that era , detested the producing of the safer fuel pushed the temperance movement to outlaw that production. Yes there has being inventions of other safer environmental sound fuel sources but we are faced with bigger Rockefeller s that have the blessing of the GOOD OLE USA GOVERNMENT !
