St. Patrick’s day gets a weird twisted respect nowadays. I bet you know one or two Patricio or Patricia out there born today – ah, the Catholic/Mexican tradition of naming your kids after the saints day… that explains my name. Kidding, I was named after that other Catholic/Mexican tradition – named after my great grandmother.
There will be no dye thrown in the Rio Grande, its already a mucky green anyway. But I have gotten all the flyers and invitations for St. Patty’s Day drink-a-thons at the local bars and clubs. The one that stuck out as interesting was “An Authentic Irish Party” at La Posada… what what?? My favorite The Reen will be playing and other live music and even a karaoke contest with a cash prize. I might swing by after I go check out the kites up North that are celebrating Spring and not green beer and cash.
Maybe this is La Posada’s way of contributing to the rise of U.S. millionaires (as was reported by yahoo finance news) $200 at a time. It no joke that our middle class is disappearing and the class division is widening tremendously – sigh. As the article states:
The millionaire population jumped in the U.S. by 8% last year, fueled by the stock market recovery, according to an industry report on Wednesday.
The number of U.S. households worth at least $1 million rose to 8.4 million in 2010, compared to 7.8 million the prior year, according to a report by Spectrem Group.
So today, we celebrate the additional green of money! Too bad most of us won’t see it – more and more of my friends are fearing the loss of their job and those budgets are getting slashed in an ugly way. Poor St. Patrick – he may have successfully led the snakes out of Ireland but has not been able to lead the snakes out of the United States😦.
