Palominos Pact, posted with vodpod

Laredo Community College is making you an offer you can’t refuse… if you qualify. They have this new Palominos Pact deal which is pretty sweet.

Any family with an income of 31K or less and a household of a minimum 3 or more will be able to attend LCC debt free. Not bad, not bad – especially considering that the annual median income for Laredo is $38,000 according to a Fannie Mae search.

Interested students must fill out their FAFSA by March 1 (recommended for ALL colleges & universities) to qualify for this program, they need to enroll for 12 college hours which is full-time. Here is the part for some of you to pay attention: must maintain a 2.0 GPA. they must also pass 70% of their classes. You can do that, right? That just means passing your classes – if you don’t its costs you and the community college.

All this points to the goal historically of community colleges (if you want to know more about the history of CCs, click here). I am most familiar with the rise in community colleges because of the returning war veterans and other folks who didn’t have access to the big, expensive four year universities of those times. After all, they were adults who didn’t need in loco parentis (instead of the parent) giving them a curfew. Communities began to have more and more classes that would address the drop-out students and those who needed shorter-term training for vocational careers.

Laredo Community College has repackaged what you may already qualify for into a contract – follow all their steps and those two years are pretty much free. Bravo, LCC!

Unfortunately, many people don’t read the catalog or know the difference in the classes – that is why it is best to sit down with an advisor or a counselor so you are on the right track before starting off with classes that may not count for what your goal is.

Good luck, whatever community college, university, trade school, apprenticeship or private school you choose to go to!
