No snowpocalypse in Laredo – maybe dustageddon

This visible image was captured by the GOES-13 satellite and shows the low pressure area bringing snowfall to the Midwest Jan. 31, 2011. Read more:

Every time I have set foot outside today, I’ve gotten a blast of dust in my face from the wind marking the change in temperature. It’s hard to believe after weather in the 80’s yesterday.

The massive winter storm is scaring many folks up North, including my parents who made sure their generator was working and stocked up on water. Of course, we in Laredo don’t have to worry about being buried under feet of snow – although many are wishing for at least being able to see snow at the end of this week. Check out some interesting preparations (even a poem) about the upcoming record-breaking storm heading our way in the Canada-based National Post.

Mayor Salinas already did his “we are preparing and coordinating for the drop in temperature” on the news broadcast at noon. Let’s hope no one is left outside if we really are expecting a freeze (we have a freeze watch, if you didn’t know).

So Laredoans & South Texans:
* wrap your exposed water pipes or leave a tiny drip of water so pipes don’t freeze up
* bring all your pets inside (my dogs are making a happy mess right now in my extra room)
* cover your plants with breathable material (I see plastic wrapping – not a good idea)
* make sure you don’t blast your heater (AEP won’t be able to take the overload), instead, make sure you layer clothes and pull out the blankets
* if you don’t have heat in your home, seek shelter elsewhere
* stay off the streets if you are not used to the cold or driving with possible ice

What else, what else… I guess just bundle up. If you have more suggestions, post them in the comments!

    from UISD:

For Immediate Release: February 1, 2011 (Sent at 11:54 a.m.)
For Information Contact: Office of Public Relations, (956) 473-6286

United I.S.D. Schools , Administrative Departments to Remain Open and Operate Under Regular Schedule

United Independent School District (United I.S.D.) Schools and Administrative Departments, including the District’s Tax Office, will continue to operate as regularly scheduled in light of the cold, wintery temperatures that are expected to last thru this week. As such, students and their families are reminded to dress warmly in layers and cover all exposed skin when outdoors.

Additionally, during this time, students should not arrive at bus stops more than 10 minutes prior to the scheduled pick up time. The United I.S.D. Transportation Department will work to ensure that buses are running on time. If an emergency notice should be issued for students living in the colonias of Hwy 59, Hwy 359, and Penitas along Mines Road , the Transportation Department will notify the schools affected so that information can be made available to parents/guardians. Additionally, parents/guardians may contact the Transportation Department at (956) 473-5230 for this information.

The District urges all to be prepared for the cold temperatures and to be mindful of the hazards and safety rules of winter weather.

United I.S.D. will alert the local media if there should be any changes or updates.

Thought I’d share some names my sister’s friends have put out there ( in Kansas City)
    “Snowtorious B.I.G.”
“SnOprah” – because it will influence the behavior of millions

    I love “SnOprah”

If we think about Laredo, though…

    The HeatStoyer
    Laredo, Dustopolis
    The Crapture
    The Mass DUSTruction

Ok, enough weather words for what is coming. I just hope the poor Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog, isn’t crushed to death by the snow.
