El Otro Laredo’s leaders

The new mayor-elect (aka Presidente Electo which is actually more of a county judge, not a mayor but… whatever) of Nuevo Laredo, Benjamin Galván Gómez met on International Bridge #1 with Laredo’s Mayor Raul Salinas. The NBC Affiliate, KGNS, did a nice piece on saying goodbye with the recent leader of three years and a hello to the new one as he starts his three years.
Vodpod videos no longer available.

Interestingly enough, both see one of the best routes to bettering Nuevo Laredo is through the arts, sports and culture. Hmmm… the new presidente municipal does have big fish to fry that are not the “norm” – the violence, the economy, lost tourism, etc. – but and as for Ramón Garza Barrios, I guess he is going to relax in Laredo (where he lives) and maybe go back to the family business as his time as el Presidente Municipal de Nuevo Laredo comes to an end.

Of course, the county of Webb also had their swearing in ceremonies but were they actually done with a lot of fanfare and at midnight like in Nuevo Laredo:

With a new logo and slogan announced and explained:

Why do I know all this stuff? Well, apparently this new Presidente Municipal is going to have more cameras following him than our little alcalde, Raul Salinas. The Nuevo Laredo facebook page is now filled with every photo op from visiting newborns to family photos. I think I am going to miss the old Nuevo Laredo facebook page which warned you about what streets to avoid when there was a gun battle taking place. Oh well, such are politics.

Good luck to all our leaders this coming year – hope you are as honest as you claim to me.

Damn. Nice post. Too often the “other” Bordertown gets ignored on this side of the Rio Grande. Politics thus continues.

But, on a side note, why is Barrios doing a “Heil Hitler” in one of the photos? His entourage not tell him that would not be an ideal picture opportunity? 🙂

The salute was used by the Romans first not Hitler and the swastika as well amongst other ancient cultures. Salinas is a leader of el otro lado as well too !
