It will begin small but hopefully this project will become bigger and better.
Between my brother’s wedding in Vegas (by the way, yes, I did run into Laredoans there. There were two different Laredo weddings taking place the same weekend!)
and traipsing around the state finally ending my bleary-eyed travels by visiting with Pulitzer Prize winner, Sonia Nazario (she came last year for the One City, One Book presentation) who wrote Enrique’s Journey, I was able to grow enough greens to feed Laredo. Sorry, that is not true – it’s just wishful thinking. BUT, I have been preparing for Laredo’s first CERTIFIED Farmer’s Market.
Yes, you read correctly. No cancellations, no hiccups (we hope), and it seems like even the weather is cooperating. It is this Saturday morning (9-1pm) and check out some of the folks who will be here to sell their yummy goods.
Laredo has developed a few backyard produce growers who will sell herbs, veggies and fruits from broccoli to Chinese lemons to pecans, grapefruits and of course… food made from these gardens. La India will also have their teas, Laredo Books & More will have gardening books, Texas Olive Oil will be selling olive oil and vinegar, Asmussen will have compost for your own gardens, and we definitely have to support the work of Martin High School’s FFA vegetables.
It will be small but it is a start and if Laredo comes out to check it out, it will be repeated with bigger and better results next time around. Hope to see you there!!
