ArtBites cooking classes

Many of you know there are a few cooking genii (geniuses) in Laredo. I had the pleasure of taking 3 classes that Maite Gomez-Rejón, owner of ArtBites, while she was visiting her native Laredo from California.

She will be appearing on the Today Show and cooking on camera on August 30th so be on the lookout for the successful Laredoan.

What makes her lessons so special is that she combines art, history and cooking so we are learning about the time period, the foods available in that region and the art that shows us about daily life. Her first session was about Thomas Jefferson’s French influence in food, her second was about English Tea and this final one about Alexander the Great. She was a patient teacher even for us who don’t know how to emulsify and mess up the ingredients when making homemade mayonnaise – but I learned. All were delicious recipes and I got a chance to meet some very cool people in Laredo (including Maite)!

Unfortunately, she is not offering anything else in Laredo but check out her page at http://www.artbites.net and as I mentioned, get ready to cheer her on when she is on the Today Show next week.

It’s weird/cool to see two former high school classmates ( Maite & Judy) and my 7th grade English teacher (Mrs. Palacios) on that video:)
