Laredo Books and More

Sometimes people make me proud for how they handle bad, bitter lemons handed to them. I am very proud of my friend Mary Benavides, former manager of B. Dalton’s bookstore for many, many years and with the best customer service attitude around. Even though she was given a bum deal by the bookstore’s parent company, she has been researching and submitting bids here and there and looks like she is on her way to opening a new books bookstore (& hopefully cafe if she can build it up her bread & butter business first) in town. First though, she will be operating via internet/email for large orders. It is not set up completely yet but be patient, be patient.

We, her friends, are helping out in different ways. One of her other friends set up a “Love a Local Business” profile on the Intuit Small Business website. You can help by following these instructions:

Ello,

I write to you all in the hopes that you will help Mary Benavides get votes for a business grant currently going from Intuit.com. Mary Benavides, as some of you know, used to run the B. Dalton store for more than thirty years. I can’t think of anyone else more suitable to operate such a business. As a friend and fellow Laredoan, I’m asking you all to help me spread the word: VOTE FOR MARY. Her store, LAREDO BOOKS & MORE, is in the works. She needs our support.

Below you will find the link to the site. Once you’re there, enter the “Laredo Texas” where it says “Enter city and state”. Click “Find Recently Loved Businesses” and a map will locate Mary’s Store with a heart icon. A window pops up, click on “Read More”. The comments are viewable if you choose to read. To vote click on “I’m a fan!”. To the right, on the 3rd step, you can cast your vote once filling out the required information.

Thanks for reading this, and if you do cast your vote Mary will be very grateful. Thanks again, and spread the word. Forward this email if you want, post the message on your MySpace, anywhere. We need a bookstore. We need it now. Students have to go out of town to get their reading material. I don’t think that’s fair. Thanks again,

Jessie

The website is a little glitchy if you are on a Mac but if you made it to the page, you can make it to find Mary’s Laredo Books and More and support Laredo’s small businesses. You can also find a Facebook page for Laredo Books and More, too!

Go Mary, go Mary, go Mary! Go readers who have nothing to lose by voting for Mary, go readers who have nothing to lose by voting for Mary, go readers who have nothing to lose by voting for Mary!

Mary Benavides on left 🙂

    Attention: Mary Benavides.
Mary, I’m trying to get in touch with you re: Luis Alberto Urrea’s visit to Laredo September 28. Cinco Puntos Press (my wife and I are the publishers) published Mr. Mendoza’s Paintbrush, and we want to make sure there are sufficient copies for you to sell at the event. Please give a call or write me a note when you have a chance.
