We’ll ignore that 90% of the U.S. celebrates Cinco de Mayo with a few drinks and think it is the Mexican Independence Day. We’ll ignore that the same drinkie, alkie twist is added to the Irish St. Patrick’s Day, the German Oktoberfest, the French Catholic Mardi Gras, etc…
Nope, today we will will focus on one person getting it right. The U.S. president hosts an annual reception and for the right reason:
Good morning from The Oval. On this day in 1862, Mexico’s army defeated French forces in the Battle of Puebla, inspiring a holiday still celebrated by many North Americans: Cinco de Mayo, the 5th of May.
Early this evening, President Obama hosts a now-traditional Cinco de Mayo reception in the White House Rose Garden.
USA Today’s The Oval reports on President Obama’s daily activities. For example, the post also goes on to mention that a veterans health care bill will also be signed today. Good to know.
Now back to your plans for partying tonight (or buying furniture at the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at Lacks – ha). I have gotten at least 3 flyers from local nighttime establishments (uh, bars) that invite you to go throw back a few in honor of el Cinco de Mayo. As for me – if Mexico doesn’t celebrate it, I guess I won’t either. Maybe I will finally get a chance to catch up on some sleep and dream about some battle in the Mexican state of Puebla where a French-Mexican stud sweeps me off my feet and we create peace in more countries than one… zzzzzz…
*requested by reader, some of the announcements for tonight:
And something at Laredo Energy Arena by La Ley sponsored by Bud Light. They didn’t send a flyer photo, just an invitation to go hear “8 power house Mexican Regional Bands…”
I am sure these are not the only ones – it is just the only invitations I received.
