Happy… what de Mayo?

We’ll ignore that 90% of the U.S. celebrates Cinco de Mayo with a few drinks and think it is the Mexican Independence Day. We’ll ignore that the same drinkie, alkie twist is added to the Irish St. Patrick’s Day, the German Oktoberfest, the French Catholic Mardi Gras, etc…

Nope, today we will will focus on one person getting it right. The U.S. president hosts an annual reception and for the right reason:

Good morning from The Oval. On this day in 1862, Mexico’s army defeated French forces in the Battle of Puebla, inspiring a holiday still celebrated by many North Americans: Cinco de Mayo, the 5th of May.

Early this evening, President Obama hosts a now-traditional Cinco de Mayo reception in the White House Rose Garden.

USA Today’s The Oval reports on President Obama’s daily activities. For example, the post also goes on to mention that a veterans health care bill will also be signed today. Good to know.

Now back to your plans for partying tonight (or buying furniture at the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at Lacks – ha). I have gotten at least 3 flyers from local nighttime establishments (uh, bars) that invite you to go throw back a few in honor of el Cinco de Mayo. As for me – if Mexico doesn’t celebrate it, I guess I won’t either. Maybe I will finally get a chance to catch up on some sleep and dream about some battle in the Mexican state of Puebla where a French-Mexican stud sweeps me off my feet and we create peace in more countries than one… zzzzzz…

*requested by reader, some of the announcements for tonight:

Something going on at the Ebar

something at the Fbar

And something at Laredo Energy Arena by La Ley sponsored by Bud Light. They didn’t send a flyer photo, just an invitation to go hear “8 power house Mexican Regional Bands…”

I am sure these are not the only ones – it is just the only invitations I received.

How refreshing to have an intelligent president who knows his history!

Like HE had ANYTHING at all to do with this! And like nobody could look at Wiki and figure this out for themselves.

I suspect your “shot” is a weak attempt on George Bush. take a look at what he had to say about this day way back in 2001.
http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=45582 He did not know his history?

      • despeinada says:

Cheez, it was just tongue-in-cheek, not political at all. Because a president is supposed to know those things, right? especially when making an announcement.
But since you are bringing up Bush…and after 8 years of Bushisms, yes, definitely…how refreshing to finally have a smart president who knows his history…and how to pronounce “nuclear” (c’mon, that’s worth a smile, at least)

and BO’s toast to “Cinco de Cuatro” last year?

or his Memorial Day statement: “On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today — our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.”

Or during the campaign: “I’ve now been in 57 states — I think one left to.”

Or also during the campaign: “In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died — an entire town destroyed.”
(There had been a tornado that killed 12 people.)

Yep he is a bright one!

OK OK, I get it, you don’t like Obama. Lighten up, get a life, get some humor. You’re gonna need it during the next 6 years.
