If anyone had ever thought that Cotulla Style Pit BBQ Restaurant (aka Cotulla’s) would rise up once again to become one of the most popular gathering places for locals and visitors, those dreams have been permanently quashed. The wrecking crew was out in full force at the building which once hosted President Bush in 2006.
LaredoTejas had recently written that a big change was happening when he noted an item on the city council agenda. A developer had requested a zone change. Interesting, interesting.
I looked up the minutes, this is all it said:
7. Public hearing and introductory ordinance amending the Zoning Ordinance (Map) of the City of Laredo by rezoning Block 855-A, Eastern Division, located at 4502 McPherson Road, from B-3 (Community Business District) to B-4 (Highway Commercial District); providing for publication and an effective date. Staff is in support of the application and the Planning & Zoning Commission recommends approval of the zone change. District IV
Motion to open the public hearing.
Moved: Cm. Garza
Second: Cm. Rangel
For: 8 Against: 0 Abstain: 0Juan Salinas, Real Estate Broker, spoke in favor of the zone change request.
Motion to close the public hearing and introduce.
Moved: Cm. Narvaez
Second: Cm. San Miguel

All that is seen is a change from a smaller business to something that should be on a highway, which McPherson is not. Now I wonder too… If you know what the plans are, please share. Juan Salinas, you spoke “for” the zoning change, what gives? Laredo still mourns the loss of Cotulla’s and now the loss of the Cotulla’s building.
Ahhhhh… the evolution of a city and its culture…

Cotulla is gone! It makes no difference,Rudy’s is more appealing to Obama, in case he comes here and expects the same treatment we gave President Bush!
The difference is that Rudy’s is a chain and Cotulla’s was local
“Highway” could be used in the old sense, as when highways went right through the center of town, before they built the interstates and the loops.
Comments from Facebook:

Cuqui – Too many memories for my Hubby and I n also for my Mom (RIP). She loved going to breakfast there.
Monica – So sad. We used to go there after Church, back when we went to Church. Oh my God, did we kill Cotulla with our return to heathenism?
Mika – Ahhh, my first memories of Laredo….
MaryHelen – No Monica, the owner and founder, Mr. Sanchez, passed away and then it went downhill after that.

All kidding aside, I thought this place was going to be turned into a (you guessed it), a maquinitas place. :/
